Disruption and diversions
Tunnel closed towards Ghent: diversion in effect
The Beverentunnel is closed to traffic heading towards Ghent as of Sunday 14 July 2024. A diversion applies via Ploegweg – Ketenislaan along the Kallo lock complex – Steenlandlaan, in order to reach the R2 via the Waaslandhaven-Zuid complex [10]. One-way traffic applies on this diversion route towards Ghent. Traffic heading towards the Netherlands is still able to pass through the Beverentunnel.
Please note: ADR traffic in categories A to D must also follow a diversion. More information on this can be found on this page.
Route directions
The one-way traffic on the diversion route will have an impact on the accessibility of port businesses and the surrounding area. Below are some route directions:
How to reach the companies at Kruipin roundabout (Haven 1000-1499) coming from the north?
Traffic on the diversion road towards Ghent follows Steenlandlaan and takes the widened slip road to the R2 towards Ghent at complex Waaslandhaven-Zuid [10]. A separate branch at the slip road will allow you to turn off to the roundabout at Kruipin and reach Haven 1000-1499.
How do you drive from Kallo centre to the businesses north of the Kallo Lock?
You have two options:
- From Kallo centre, drive onto the E34 via the Melsele slip road [9] and then take the exit for the R2 towards the Netherlands. Drive through the Beveren tunnel and take the Waaslandhaven-Noord exit [11].
- From Kallo-centre, turn left onto Steendlandlaan and follow the diversions road towards Ghent. Then take the widened slip road to the R2 towards Ghent at complex Waaslandhaven-Zuid [10]. A separate branch on the slip road allows you to turn off to the Kruipin roundabout. At the Kruipin roundabout, take the slip road to the R2 towards the Netherlands. Drive through the Beveren Tunnel and finally take the Waaslandhaven-Noord exit [11].
How does local freight traffic from the north drive to Kallo centre?
Traffic on the diversion route towards Ghent will follow Steenlandlaan and take the widened slip road to the R2 towards Ghent at complex Waaslandhaven-Zuid [10]. Traffic then takes the route via the Beveren intersection (E34), exit Melsele [9], Melseledijk, Steenlandlaan and can turn around at the Keetberglaan roundabout. Because of the truck lock on Fabriekstraat, it is not possible to drive to Kallo centre via Fabriekstraat.
Alterations on diversion road
In spring 2024, we worked intensively on the diversion route towards Ghent. Ten adjustments optimise safety and flow for the many traffic.
During the renovation, we constantly monitor the situation on the diversion route and check whether adjustments are needed.
Prevention of cut-through traffic
To prevent heavy traffic from creeping into the centre of Kallo from the north, we installed a 2.7-metre truck lock near the Milcobel site (Fabriekstraat). Passing-through car traffic is also barred from the village centre at the municipality's request. Destination traffic that needs to be in Fabriekstraat will have passage. Passage for emergency services also remains assured at all times.
A tonnage restriction of 3.5 tonnes applies on approach roads via the south. Deliveries and rubbish collection in Fabriekstraat will take place along the south side. The municipality placed warning front porches four metres high and signalisation signs at the intersections Steenlandlaan/Fabriekstraat, Kwarikweg/Scheldedijk and on Melseledijk at the E34 viaduct.
Sneak traffic will also be kept out of the village centres of Kieldrecht and Verrebroek. The municipality of Beveren took the following measure to this end:
- Placement of truck locks in the Middenstraat, near Blikken. This will allow heavy goods and ADR traffic to only follow the official diversions via Blikken. Passage for other motorised traffic will always be guaranteed.
Train traffic diversion
To ensure a smooth flow on the diversion route, train traffic will be interrupted on weekdays during rush hours at the crossing at Ploegweg and Oudedijk, near the Kallo Lock. From 05.30 am to 07.00 pm, freight trains will be routed via Steenlandlaan - Hazopweg - Hoogschoorweg - Blikken - Sint-Antoniusweg. Outside rush hours, from 7.00 pm to 05.30 am, train traffic can pass through. We will also make the railway crossings traffic light-controlled. At the weekend, train traffic can always pass through according to its normal schedule. For further information, please contact Infrabel.
Incident on diversion road?
If the diversion route is blocked, for example in case of an emergency, a diversion via Steenlandlaan - Hazopweg - Hoogschoorweg - Blikken - Sint-Antoniusweg (emergency routes U and Z) will apply to all traffic.
Incident in the Kennedytunnel?
If the Kennedytunnel (R1) is blocked in the direction of the Netherlands, a diversion via the route on the R2 will apply. If the tunnel in the direction of Ghent is blocked, there are three ways to take a detour. From Zeeland, you take the N62 - Westerscheldetunnel - E34. From Antwerp, you take the A12 - Rupeltunnel - Temsebrug (N16) - E17. From Willebroek/Brussels, you take the A12 - R0 - E40.
