What about ADR traffic (transportation of hazardous materials)?
Tunnel category lowered from D to C
To ensure safety, the Beverentunnel currently falls under tunnel category D with regard to ADR traffic*. This means that the transportation of solid, liquid and gaseous substances and gases that may cause an explosion or fire, or may cause toxic substances to be released, is not permitted. This was decided after a risk analysis in 2020. After the complete renovation, the Beverentunnel will fall under Category C. The transportation of hazardous materials in solid form will then be permitted. Vehicles transporting liquids and gases will still be required to take a detour. In practice, this will reduce the number of overground detours for ADR traffic from about 1,900 journeys to 650 journeys per week and per direction of travel.
*ADR stands for ‘Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route’.
ADR traffic diversion
As of July 2024, ADR traffic towards Ghent will travel via the diversion route. ADR traffic bound for the Netherlands up to and including category E may pass through the tunnel. For other ADR traffic, a detour via Hazopweg - Hoogschoorweg - Sint-Antoniusweg applies.
