Reclassification of the renovated tunnel
To ensure safety, the Beverentunnel was previously assigned tunnel category D with regard to ADR traffic*. This means that the transport of solid, liquid and gaseous substances and gases that could cause an explosion or fire, or could result in the release of toxic substances, was not permitted. This decision was made following a risk analysis in 2020.
Since the completion of the total renovation on Thursday, 13 November 2025 (5 a.m.), the Beverentunnel has been reclassified as a category C tunnel. The transport of hazardous substances that could cause a major fire is now permitted. The transport of hazardous substances that could cause a major explosion or the release of large quantities of toxic substances still requires a detour. In practice, this has reduced the number of above-ground detours for ADR traffic from approximately 1,900 movements to 650 movements per week and per direction of travel.
The final signage for the tunnel category change still needs to be installed. Once this is in place, the new category will come into effect.
*ADR stands for ‘Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route’.
